Have you heard Aitch?
I first did two years ago when her work was being shown at La Petite Mort gallery- may it rest. Her paintings and illustrative work explore the aesthetic of ornate and delicate design while taking on dark and sinister subject matter. While I have shy-ed away from looking at her more commercial work, series like The Garden of Good and Evil and my personal favorite Coffins take on the oh-so trendy folklore and flora imagery we are seeing everywhere with depth in narrative and historical reference, specifically within the artist's homeland of Romania. The dream-like state in which her works situate themselves in appear to be more of a recount than imagination leaving the viewer with a sense of nostalgia and really, more questions than answers- who are the characters in her pieces? Woman she knows? What is their relationship to sparse and scattered world around?
Strange, beautiful and dark.
